History of Vajska

Written sources on Vajska are scarce online, so we are building this page step by step with the help of residents. This is what is confirmed so far.

Old names

In historical lists of settlements the village also appears as Tothwayzka. The name belongs to a group of Danube villages with Tót in their names, where the Bačka Šokci lived or still live (ZKVH, Naselje Šokac). Today’s official names are Vajska, Hungarian Vajszka and Józsefháza, German Wajska (Wikipedia).

A shrinking village

Between 1961 and 2011 the population fell from 4,355 to 2,834, by a third (Wikipedia). As in many villages of Bačka, young people move to the cities.

The ferry to Borovo, 1991

After the fighting at Borovo Selo in Croatia, a Danube ferry between Vajska and Borovo started on 4 May 1991. It reportedly carried between 10,000 and 30,000 passengers, among them Croat refugees from Borovo (Wikipedia).
